Weather Policy
At Lexington Habitat for Humanity (LHFH), the safety of our participants, volunteers, and staff is our top priority. The Shamrock Shuffle will take place rain or shine, except in cases of severe or dangerous weather. This policy outlines our procedures for inclement weather and event modifications.
1. Weather Monitoring and Decision-Making
LHFH event organizers will closely monitor local weather conditions leading up to and during the event using National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts and radar. Decisions regarding delays, modifications, or cancellations will be made in consultation with local safety officials.
2. Severe Weather Conditions
The event may be delayed, modified, or canceled in the case of the following hazardous weather conditions:
• Lightning – If lightning is detected within 10 miles of the event site, the race will be delayed or cancelled after the last observed lightning strike. Participants will be directed to seek shelter.
• Tornado Warnings – If a tornado warning is in effect, the event will be canceled immediately, and participants will be instructed to seek safe shelter.
• Severe Thunderstorms – If high winds, hail, or dangerous thunderstorms are expected, the event may be delayed or canceled.
• Extreme Cold or Heat – If temperatures fall below 25°F (with wind chill) or exceed 90°F (with high humidity), race modifications (such as shortened distances or additional hydration stations) may be implemented.
• Flooding or Ice – If roads or pathways are deemed unsafe due to flooding or ice accumulation, the event may be canceled or rerouted.
3. Event Modifications and Cancellations
• Delays – The race may be delayed in 30-minute increments if conditions are expected to improve.
• Course Adjustments – In the event of partially hazardous conditions, an altered course or shorter distance may be implemented.
• Cancellation – If severe weather persists or conditions are deemed unsafe, the event may be canceled. No refunds will be issued.
4. Communication Plan
LHFH will notify participants of any changes or cancellations via:
• Email (to all registered participants)
• Social Media (Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn updates)
• Website Updates (LexHabitat.org and ShamrockShuffle3K.com)
• On-Site Announcements (PA system and volunteers)
5. Participant Responsibility
• Participants should dress appropriately for weather conditions and be prepared for potential delays.
• If weather conditions become unsafe during the event, participants should follow all instructions from race officials and volunteers.
By registering for the Shamrock Shuffle, participants acknowledge that weather-related cancellations are a possibility and that no refunds will be issued. Our priority is to provide a safe and enjoyable event while supporting the mission of Lexington Habitat for Humanity.
